Jahnavi has been involved in photography for over four decades beginning with a serious pursuit of black and white in her early teens. She has an extensive formal education in photography with a life time of experience in traditional fine art black and white … the old school film and darkroom approach.   Jahnavi specializes in large format images of natural phenomena in nature and attunement to the atmosphere of place.

.

The luminosity of a silver photographic print is an expression of light, the source of the image itself.   For this reason  –  light on silver,  I continue to use traditional film and darkroom processes.  Light on silver is what I fell in love with long ago, like a painter loving paint or a sculptor seeing into stone.

..

A devotee of Eastern spiritual studies, Jahnavi is an initiate and teacher in Hinduism and Sufism, with soul ties to Tibetan Buddhism, Native American Spirituality, and the Mystery Schools.  Currently, Jahnavi is a student of the Diamond Approach founded by AH Almaas. She is also a long time musician and leader of the Dances of Universal Peace.

Jahnavi brings an inner spiritual dimension to her own photographic art, teaching, and creativity through journaling, personal inquiry, and self-exploration. Her self designed courses, Focusing Within, Experiential Seeing and the Visual Journal Process, introduce participants to a deeper awareness of their own creativity and personal image making process.

An educator, writer, and visual artist, Jahnavi shares publicly for the first time on this site a personal book project, Centering: Experiential Meditations of a Visual Naturea monograph of her visual work coupled with written meditations, spiritual practices and inner experiences inspired by the photographs and based on an understanding of her personal sense  of composition.

In June of 1998, Jahnavi attended a gallery opening for her work at the Focal Point Gallery in New York. Aside from being an exciting day, the contactful experience with those she met inspired her to begin teaching.  While in the taxi on the way back to the airport, came the inspiration for Developing Light, jahnavi’s call to share the inner and outer aspects of creative expression through light on silver, aka, photography.

In addition to Developing Light, Jahnavi teaches at the Photographic Center Northwest, an accredited Fine Art Photography School in downtown Seattle. A former instructor at Green River Community College, Jahnavi serves as an Affiliate Faculty member in photography for Antioch University, Seattle.
