CMS has proposed expanding its joint-replacement bundled-payment model nationwide for hip, knee and ankle procedures, with a planned start date of October 1, 2027.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has proposed a nationwide expansion of its joint-replacement bundled-payment model.
In a press release on April 10, CMS said the expanded Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement model would cover hip, knee and ankle replacements and would be mandatory for most hospitals if finalized. The agency said the model would begin on October 1, 2027.
CMS said the proposal would run through the FY 2027 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System and Long-Term Care Hospital proposed rule. The agency also said the earlier CJR model ran from April 1, 2016 through December 31, 2024 and generated Medicare savings while maintaining quality.
