UAW Local 2093 members began striking at American Axle’s plant in Three Rivers, Michigan, after contract talks failed and the union’s deadline passed.
Union officials said workers walked out at 12:01 a.m. Monday, June 1. Reuters reported that about 1,000 unionized workers were expected to join the strike at the plant, which makes axles for GM pickup trucks.
The United Auto Workers said the company did not present a fair deal before the contract expired on May 31. The union has said the dispute centers on wages, health care, retirement benefits and profit sharing.
The strike follows a 98% vote by Local 2093 members to authorize a walkout.
Early local coverage on Monday said picket lines were forming later in the morning, confirming that the strike was underway.
It was not immediately clear how long the work stoppage would last or whether bargaining would resume quickly. The impact on General Motors production and other customers also remained an open question.
American Axle had not immediately issued a public response in the information reviewed for this report.
