UAW Local 2093 members at American Axle’s plant in Three Rivers, Michigan, began a strike Monday after contract talks stalled over wages.
The union said the walkout started at 12:01 a.m. and that additional picket lines were set up later in the morning. Reuters reported that about 1,000 unionized workers are involved at the plant, which supplies axles and driveline parts for GM pickup trucks.
According to the UAW, the dispute centers on restoring wages after earlier concessions. The union says top pay at the plant is $22 an hour.
The strike follows a vote earlier in May in which workers authorized a walkout by 98% if the company did not offer what the union called a fair contract.
CBS Detroit reported early Monday that workers were on strike at the Three Rivers facility. The union described the action as an unfair labor practice strike.
It was not immediately clear whether American Axle would make a new contract proposal or how long the strike might last.
